Finishings & Refinements

Explore finishing and refinement options like contour cutting and gold foil for your print projects. Learn how to specify these in your design file using spot colors. Discover tips for applying spot varnishing and importing spot color libraries in InDesign and Illustrator.

In addition to normal printing, it is also possible to apply one or more finishings and refinements, such as contour cutting or gold foil. You can indicate this in your file with a spot colour and the correct name. Download the spot colour library to view all the spot colour names InDesign or Illustrator all at once. You import this via the colour swatch window.

View the file specifications on the product pages for a detailed explanation of how it would be delivered. The finishings and refinements that we offer are:

Frequently asked questions

How do I apply spot varnishing?

For spot varnishing, the 'overprint' setting must be enabled. Do you want to include a UV spot varnish in your design? Then make sure to create a separate spot color that is only used for the varnish. You can name this color, for example, "varnish" and set it to overprint. This way, it will be clear which areas should be varnished.

Why use overprint and not 'knockout'?

The production process for spot varnishing involves two rounds. The first round prints the design. The second round applies the spot varnish.

If you set the spot object to 'knockout', the spots will not be printed, but will remain white (as if on white paper). The machine applies the varnish in the second round, but if there is a white edge around the spot, it will not be covered by the varnish. Naturally, overprint ensures that the underlying color layer is printed underneath the spot object, preventing white edges.
